Catherine Shoichet is a senior writer covering immigration and demographics for CNN Digital.

Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, Catherine got hooked on journalism at her high school newspaper. And she hasn't stopped ever since.

In college, The Harvard Crimson's newsroom was her favorite classroom. Once she learned to cover a beat and tasted the thrill of a scoop, there was no turning back.

As a reporter for four years at the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, she covered five tropical storms, two alligator attacks, one international real estate scam and countless county commission meetings.

Catherine shifted her focus toward global news in 2008, when Columbia University's journalism school awarded her the Gray Fellowship for International Reporting.

After graduating from Columbia with an M.A. in political journalism, she moved to Mexico, where she studied Spanish and worked in the Mexico City bureau of The Associated Press.

She joined CNN in 2010.

Her in-depth reporting has earned awards from the Society for Features Journalism and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
